Leading the Way in Environmental and Safety Engineering Education

ESESA-UMaT has emerged as a pivotal academic department, dedicated to addressing the pressing environmental and safety challenges within the mining and petroleum industries. Our educational programs have empowered over hundreds of graduates, fostering a generation of professionals equipped to implement sustainable practices across diverse sectors.

Since our establishment, ESESA-UMaT has significantly expanded its curriculum, keeping pace with industry needs. This strategic growth has enabled our students and faculty to lead impactful research and apply their expertise in real-world safety and environmental management practices.

Our Journey

A Brief History of ESESA-UMaT

Founded in 2013, ESESA-UMaT was born out of a recognized need for specialized education in environmental and safety engineering. Spearheaded by visionary faculty, the department began with a four-year Bachelor’s degree. Since then, it has evolved into a robust institution that promotes sustainability, graduating over 200 students and expanding its programs to include postgraduate and professional courses.

The journey of ESESA-UMaT reflects a commitment to excellence in environmental and safety education. With a dedicated faculty team that has grown from 2 to 11, our department continues to advance its influence in the mining sector and beyond.

Our Mission

To provide outstanding education in environmental engineering and occupational safety, ensuring the highest standards in teaching, research, and professional support within the community.

Our Values

We are committed to integrity, innovation, and collaboration, fostering an environment that advocates for safety and environmental stewardship in all our academic and professional endeavors.

Message from the H.O.D

I welcome you all to the Environmental and Safety Engineering (ES) Department of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT). As a department, our focus is to make a significant impact in society through three main areas, namely, teaching, research and community services.  Our industry-focused curriculum is a blend of theory and practice and ensures that our students are well-trained and industry-ready. Our faculty members are involved in industry-based research and community services, focusing on generating solutions that meet the specific needs of industry and society. The research outputs of our faculty members are visible in several international peer-reviewed journals.
It has been over a decade since the Department was established, and we are happy to have graduated about 8 batches (from 2017 to 2024) of graduates in our BSc Environmental and Safety Engineering programme. Most of the graduates have settled well in the industry and continue to contribute to improving workplace safety and health conditions and promoting effective stewardship. We are proud of our alumni who are found across diverse industries, including mining, oil and gas, manufacturing, teaching and research, transportation, energy and telecommunication, among others.
We are focused on strengthening our collaboration with industry and professional bodies to ensure that our programmes, services and research meet the growing needs of society and contribute to addressing the sustainable development goals.
